“Over the past 50 years Africa’s lion populations have plummeted from over 200,000 individuals back in the 1960’s to fewer than 21,000 today. A shocking number if you consider the size of that continent”

Situated on one of the most exclusive rooftops in New York, South African born artist Conor Mccreedy, Colin Cowie and Mike Eilertson hosted an exclusive launch event for Protecting African Lions (PAL) Foundation with VIP guests and friends. Investors, activists, entrepreneurs, supermodels, artists, philanthropists, actors and many more, all united together to bring awareness to the African Lion, a majestic creature whose population is rapidly decreasing. The mission of this global organization is to raise awareness and to start protecting lions from further decline against poaching, non regulated hunting and many other issues that will allow the lion to thrive in its natural wild habitat. It has established a foundation designed to protect lions and to become a key strategic partner for governmental and other affiliated charity programs such as Ubuntu Educational Fund, The Mara Foundation and many more.

louis vuitton yayoi kusama collection 2012

Louis Vuitton Yayoi Kusama Limited Edition Collection 2012

Since its creation in 1854, Louis Vuitton has maintained a close relation with the world of art. Strengthened by this tradition, which has been intensified under the artistic direction of Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton is happy to associate itself with the first retrospective dedicated to the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. This exhibition, which invites visitors to immerse themselves into the world of Kusama, has been travelling from the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid to the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and will continue its journey to the Tate Modern in London and the Whitney Museum in New York City, next July 2012. A collection issued from the collaboration between Yayoi Kusama and Marc Jacobs will interpret the most emblematic artworks of Kusama. It was in 2006 that Marc Jacobs encountered Yayoi Kusama in Tokyo. Art collector Marc Jacobs is a fan of Kusama’s sculptures and paintings: “the obsessive character and the innocence of her artwork touch me. She succeeds in sharing her vision of the world with us.” The admiration is mutual: Kusama, whose works include many performances which examine clothing and the body, has a profound respect for Marc’s creativity. A photo of this encounter is today hanging on the wall of the Kusama Studio in Tokyo.

The starting points for the collection were obsession and seriality. The iconic Louis Vuitton leather goods, ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, watches and jewellery became the supports for Kusama’s organic repetitive patterns. Treated in vigorous and hybrid colours, the polka dots cover the products infinitely. All over, express the unlimited possibilities of playing with scales, colours and densities. When the “kusamesque” figure comes to life, the patterns ripple and lead the eye into a stroboscopic game. No middle, no beginning and no end: this hallucinatory proliferation will also be relayed in the Louis Vuitton windows worldwide decorated with emblematic motifs: biomorphic shaped “nerves” sculptures for windows named “BEGINNING OF THE UNIVERSE”; flowers entitled “ETERNAL BLOOMING FLOWERS IN MY MIND” and especially red polka dots on white background among which Kusama figures named “SELF-OBLITERATION” can be spotted. For the artist, who sees her life as “a dot lost among millions of other dots”, this collaboration will allow her to spread her polka dots infinitely across the world and convey her message: “Love Forever”. “It enables her to increase her audience and that of contemporary art in general, concludes Marc Jacobs. The task Louis Vuitton has always set itself.”

The Yayoi Kusama collection will launch globally on 09 July 2012. For more information click on www.louisvuitton.com or contact Louis Vuitton Cape Town on 021 4059700.

talking music – nick minaj

Nicki Minaj

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, the second mainstream album from the rapper Nicki Minaj, debuting at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart last week, selling 81,000 copies on her second wind, bringing Roman Reloaded’s total sales to 334,700. The album features the star-studded likes of Lil Wayne, Drake, Nas, Young Jeezy and 2 Chainz. Nicki Minaj is, line for line, one of the wittiest, most creative rappers working today and her many personas and voices fly through her songs with joyful abandon, and she seems to be having so much fun. On the effervescent, minimally invasive bounce track “Beez in the Trap,” Minaj plays the queen of a hive, with Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz buzzing around her. The Trinidadian American rapper from New York City offers repeated evidence of her talents, and she delivers funny, biting, bawdy lines and rhyming couplets with apparent glee.Nicki has a personal style that defies all the rules of fashion instead of wearing the same frocks as other stars she dons curve-clinging jumpsuits, bright ensembles, pompom dresses and insane wigs, “I won’t wear red. I have always been a pink girl and I feel like red is the anti-pink,” says Minaj. The worlds most colorful rapper, Nicki has certainly found her place in the entertainment industry.

talking secrets with conor mccreedy

Conor Mccreedy

South African born artist Conor Mccreedy, now living predominantly in New York City has been painting all his life and has created his own signature blue colour. I had the opportunity to talk to him in New York by phone and asked him about his signature blue, “It’s my blue, ‘Mccreedy Blue’ and it’s my own colour. I love it because it makes me happy, it’s a beautiful colour, it’s my favourite colour. It symbolizes the ocean, it symbolizes life. I’m inspired by life and ocean,” says Mccreedy. The most notable thing about talking to Conor is his ‘passion’, he is by nature full of life and energy and you can’t help but get swept away a little by this, not only for his amazing artwork, but his ambition and drive. Not afraid to push boundaries and break rules with his artwork, Conor respects his work for what it is and not what it should be or what society or critics expect it to be. Now, 25, he is poised to venture outside of his artistic world to explore other creative avenues whilst still keeping his feet firmly grounded in his true passion, painting. He discussed a film prospect as well as a visit home in the next few months. Certainly a Proudly South African man, Conor has become somewhat of an ambassador for South African arts, paying tribute to Africa in his work and in his life. His love of the African landscape and nature is undeniable as he lights up when surrounded by nature. Inspired by the ocean, the African bush and wildlife, his latest exhibition is aptly titled “African Ocean” which is currently being shown at The Charles Bank Gallery in New York. “I’m always working, right now I’m not painting because my show is on, but I’m drawing in journals every night, I have a little book and I do sketches,” says Mccreedy. Conor is proud to have one of his paintings added to the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art today! Secret: He mentioned as a tidbit that he inherited his defined chin from his great great grandfather, Sir Theophilis Shepstone, and Conor is the only one in his family to have been given that particular trait since.
