A fashion brand that needs absolutely no introduction, Calvin Klein opened it’s doors in Cape Town, South Africa in November 2014 with a soiree to rival all others. SA’s top celebrities and socialites including¬†Cosmopolitan Magazine SA‘s Sexiest Man 2014 &¬†TV Personality Jonathan Boynton-Lee, TV personality Maps Maponyane and Syfy Channel‘s¬†Dominion actress Kim Engelbrecht took to the red carpet at this prestigious launch event. With mouth watering hors d’oevres, champagne and wine to celebrate, I was delighted to see so many friends and familiar faces including JP Duminy with his gorgeous wife Sue Duminy, Cindy Nell, Catriona Andrew,¬†Ty Keogh, Tanya van Graan with her husband Kasper Kristoffersen, Tammy B, Bjorn Steinbach, Roxy Louw and, always willing to help with anything, comedian Anne Hirsch showed me around the store (pics on Denzil Jacobs Photography¬†Facebook Page tomorrow). It certainly was a spectacular evening and after taking a look around the store, it’s all about casual chic for men and women (jeans starting at around R1800.00 per pair) all the way to formal suiting for men and everyone’s favourite, Calvin Klein underwear for men an women. All current ranges on par with what you’d find at CK globally.

Stop by at Calvin Klein at V&A Waterfront and pick up a little something CK… you know you want to!

the 154th annual l’ormarins queen’s plate

01.18-LOrmarins-Queens-Plate-Bonang-Matheba-Maps-Maponyane-Ryk-Neethling-Cindy-Nell-Liezel-Van-Der-Westhuizen-Denzil-Jacobs

Without a doubt the event I look forward to most in January each year, the prestigious and ever elegant 154th L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate took place last week in Cape Town. I was graciously invited and immediately made my way to Hilton Weiner to discuss outfit options, as this event’s dress-code is strictly blue and white. As always, the kind folks at Hilton Weiner prepared a few options for me and you can see what we ended up with on my Facebook Page, but back to the event itself.

No surprise, South Africa’s favourite personalities donned their finest blue &¬†white, not forgetting intricate fascinators and hats,¬†as the races and betting got underway. In the indulgent Stud Club Marquee, guests included Bonang Matheba¬†(wearing Gert-Johan Coetzee),¬†Nthato Mashishi, Jo-Ann Strauss¬†(wearing Stefania Morland),¬†Cindy Nell, Natalie Becker, Jimmy Nevis, Ryk Neethling (with his gorgeous lady), Liezel van der Westhuizen and the ever dapper Mr Maps Maponyane, just to name a few! Socialites socialized, horse-racing enthusiasts placed bets and I, well I enjoyed an afternoon with some amazing people and friends, getting to do what I love most, take photographs. I think what’s most appealing about this event is the simple elegance of it all, it’s Hampton’s style in Cape Town with amazing food and drink and even more amazing company. No frills, just effortless style. This was my fourth consecutive LQP, and it remains a firm favorite. Don’t ask me about the races tho, I don’t remember seeing any horses *wink*!

Without a doubt my personal favorite equestrian event on the social calendar in South Africa, The 153rd L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate takes place this weekend, 11 January 2014 at the Kenilworth Race Course in Cape Town. Guests including some of South Africa’s biggest names in entertainment, media and television cordially dress to the nines in blue and white, as this stylish event’s dress code demands. ¬†In it’s own league as a horse-racing event, the Queen’s Plate over the years have hosted celebrities including former Miss South Africa¬†& television personality ¬†Jo-Ann Strauss, Jennifer Su, the gorgeous (and for the second time, radiantly pregnant) Lee-Ann Liebenberg¬†with her husband Nicky Van Der Walt. Also seen at the Queen’s Plate, SA’s very own Olympic swimmer Ryk Neethling, television personality on SABC3‘s Top Billing and Top Travel¬†Janez Vermeiren, ¬†Roxy Louw, Kuli Roberts, Marc Lottering, Chad Saaiman, Pearl Thusi,¬†Leigh-Anne Williams, Natalie Becker, Tanya Nefdt, Gina Myers,¬†Kia Johnson, Elana Afrika. This year promises to be as elegant as ever as guests fly from all over the country to attend.

louis vuitton spring/summer 2013

Louis Vuitton Women's Spring Summer 2013 Show 01

A series of columns, descending on the elegant angle of an escalator, traversing the horizontal of the catwalk and ascending again, formed the fundamental structure of the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2013 presentation. Each look was a strict rectangle when considered from the perspective of an architect’s elevation, interrupted on the horizontal at three levels, with the sleeve heads offering the only deviation from the straight and narrow. This strict template was inspired in part by the conceptual artist Daniel Buren and his work Les Deux Plateaux, a series of 260 columns of three different heights arranged in a grid within the great courtyard of the Palais Royal in Paris. This was the first ever Louis Vuitton collection where the monogram was nowhere to be seen; instead, the damier pattern provided the house’s signature. Squares in differing colours and textures and at varying scales gave the clothes and accessories a starkly graphic quality.

Louis Vuitton Women's Spring Summer 2013 Show 02

For all its crisp, clean lines and bold blankness, the collection still included the labour-intensive embellishments for which Louis Vuitton is famous. The tiniest sequins ever produced were arranged by the thousand to create fluid metallic surfaces, while slightly larger paillettes were stacked four-deep and stitched in precise grids to create geometric relief textures. ‚ÄėTuffetage‚Äô, a technique taken from carpet-making, was embroidered on cloth and leather to create a flock-like effect. Surfaces were decorated with goose feathers, applied with painstaking care to produce a perfectly even texture and trimmed to create crisp-edged squares.

Making such extreme simplicity work requires extreme precision. When every seam and every line is so conspicuous, every detail so architectural in its rigour, dimensions have to be exact to a fraction of a millimetre. Checks had to be matched uniformly on the seams, and allowances made for the way embellishments slightly altered the surface area of the fabrics they covered to ensure a perfectly regular grid. Woven leather underwent a special pressing process to ensure a completely flat, even surface. A fundamental duality underpinned the collection: between the two colours of each grid; between shiny and matt textures; between presence and absence, in the case of the dresses with the cut-out squares. The collection was presented on models in pairs to reinforce these oppositions. Artistic director Marc Jacobs had the image of two very different French icons of the 1960s, Françoise Hardy and Jane Birkin, in mind when creating the collection: Hardy always very covered up, Birkin always revealing plenty of flesh, but both always in long, simple clothes.

The rectilinear discipline extended to the bags and shoes. The Envelope and the Flat already had the requisite right angles, while the Speedy was re-engineered in square and cubic forms. The shoes were long and straight, the bow on the upper forming a bold geometric, while the heel was a precise metal triangle. The show was presented on a site-specific installation created by Daniel Buren in collaboration with Louis Vuitton. A catwalk of vast squares of glass in yellow and white, with four escalators and the roof of the tent perforated with a random scattering of circles. It was only fitting that a collection inspired by one of Buren’s installations should be presented on a set designed by him.

a photoshoot with jo-ann strauss

Jo-Ann Strauss

After a fairytale wedding in Cape Town and a luxurious honeymoon in the Maldives, TV personality Jo-Ann Strauss may have changed her last name, but remains as gorgeous as ever. I joined Jo-Ann on a photoshoot with one of South Africa’s biggest photographers, Johan Wilke and took some photographs myself. She looking absolutely breathtaking in her Gideon gown in the same setting as her wedding, just a few weeks ago. With a few more wardrobe changes, it was clear that time away with the love of her life has really done her well!
