talking secrets with lee-anne summers

Talking Sectrets - Lee Anne Summers

Drawn to acting from the age of 3, South African actress Lee-Anne Summers defines the moment she knew it was what she is meant to do was while watching Kirsten Dunst in “Spider-Man“. Lee-Anne joined me for a cup of coffee at the One & Only Resort in Cape Town for a chat and I quickly learned that she is a passionate and driven person who is not only an amazing actress, but also a producer, “The nice thing is when you have something that you’re passionate about, you work ten times harder that anyone else“, says Summers. As a local and international actress, Summers is best known for her role in the 2007 cinema hit, “Big Fellas“, but as a young girl, she was involved in productions such Oliver, The Crucible, The Frog Prince and The Hitchhiker in high school. To satisfy her family before embarking on a professional acting career, she completed a degree in psychology and with the blessing of her parents moved to New York City to study acting full time at the New York Film Academy. To make her dream come true and study in New York, she worked two jobs in South Africa to save up and finance her goal. Summers returned to South Africa and worked on a few soaps, including “Rhythm City” and “Binnelanders“, but never lost sight of her passion to be on stage and film.

Looking back, Summers mentioned working on “Big Fellas” and “Little Kings” as a highlight in her career, but she also fondly mentioned her current stage production, “Fat Pig“, producing and acting in the stage production of “Fat Pig” with Colin Moss. “I’m heartbroken for most of the show, and that’s why I’m acting crazy and that’s where the comedy is” she says about her role in the production. “Another secret, when I was producing the Cape Town run of Fat Pig, in the last week I took a witches hat to the theatre and I said, this is the producing hat, when i have the hat on, you can talk to me as a producer when I have the hat off, I’m an actor“, jokes Summers.

Wearing a gorgeous, yet simple dress, Lee-Anne Summers accentuated her look with Nina Jarebrink jewellery, which recently launched in South Africa and stunning Jimmy Choo heels and mentioned Jeffreys Bay as her favorite place in the world. Check out this quick “Talking Sectrets” video with Lee-Anne Summers.

Fat Pig will be running from 10 April – 5 May 2012 at Old Mutual Theatre On The Square, Sandton, Johannesburg – Book at www.strictlytickets.com

amsterdams blauw by scotch & soda

Scotch and soda

Amsterdams Blauw is the denim collection of the Amsterdam-based fashion brand Scotch & Soda.

The name Amsterdams Blauw (or: Amsterdam Blue) is the colour of paint that was used in the Golden Century, between 1500-1750, to paint Dutch porcelain. The striking blue colour was obtained by mixing indigo from China and Japan with an oil-based paint. Nowadays, this colour is still widely visible in the streets of Amsterdam on house number plates and street signs.

Scotch & Soda Amsterdams Blauw is an ambitious young denim project that draws inspiration from American and Japanese denim aesthetics. We’re constantly inspired by our great city Amsterdam, which allows us to be free in our approach to things. Amsterdams Blauw wants to play the maverick card and be the new and fresh alternative for the denim establishment; we like to portray the collection as the challenger brand. After successfully launching the first mens denim collection for Spring/Summer 2011, Scotch & Soda now also holds Amsterdams Blauw collections for women, boys and girls.

She recently took part in Danny K‘s latest music video and is looking forward to being one of the presenters and singers for the upcoming South African Music Awards.

Su also lists Cape Town, Bangkok and Hong Kong as her favourite destinations in the world.

47th annual fleur du cap theatre awards 2012

Fleur du Cap Awards 2012

Nominees and VIP guests were greeted on the red carpet with champagne, cocktails and canapés at the prestigious 47th annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, held at the Baxter Theatre on Sunday 18 March 2012. Director and choreographer Alfred Hinkel took a new approach to this year’s entertainment and created a production that involved Heather Mac, dancers from his new company Garage and the two Masters of Ceremony, Alan Committie and Hannes van Wyk. It was certainly a magical evening for ‘Klaasvakie’ with Wilna Snyman winning Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play and Nicole Hanekom receiving the prize for Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Play. The award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play went to Carel Nel for ‘Die Rebellie van Lafras Verwey’. Actor and lecturer Christopher Weare was awarded the Fleur Du Cap Lifetime Achievement award for his contribution to South African theatre. With 20 categories this year, winners were awarded a beautiful silver medallion and R15,000 making a Fleur du Cap the most coveted award in the industry.

I had the opportunity once again to chat to a legend in South African TV and theatre, Wilna Snyman and Tinarie van Wyk Loots as they pay homage to their mothers.

kia johnson enjoying her pregnancy

Kia Johnson, The Expresso Show Pregnant 01

Over the moon about having a baby girl, The Expresso Show‘s Kia Johnson is enjoying her first pregnancy and looking radiant. With her little baby kicking and moving around in her tummy at 28 weeks, Kia keeps to a controlled diet and ensures that she eats at regular intervals to offset nausea. She also works out to keep fit, but is cautious not to overexert herself. As a presenter on a breakfast show, Kia’s little one, who’s name is not yet decided, tends to be awake at the time of the show and is usually kicking and moving around. This is both an emotional and exciting time for Kia Johnson, as she ventures into new community projects which will be revealed in due time and as she brings her bundle of joy into the world. “I’m getting very emotional at times bursting into tears as my hormones are going a little crazy and the anticipation of bringing this life into the world has me aware of so many things in the world. When I think of these things I fill up with fear for my daughter, hoping I can protect her as much as possible.  I also wonder what she’s going to think of me as her mother” says Johnson.

Kia Johnson, The Expresso Show Pregnant 02

Follow Kia Johnson on Twitter and Facebook for pregnancy updates and feel free to share your pregnancy experiences with her. Catch Kia on The Expresso show weekday mornings at 5:30am on SABC3.
